Advanced Tools for Low-carbon, high-value development of historic architecture in the Alpine Space


The project is divided into 4 technical work packages:

WP T1: Building stock analysis and documentation of good practice building solutions

will be the main source of data. for all other activities within the project will be created. Based on identifited typologies of the historic building stock (Typology Approach), related examples of robust and applicable solutions for sustainable retrofit will be documented, evaluated, and promoted for the macro region of Alpine Space in an online georeferenced database – the Historic Building Atlas. In accordance with the EUSALP strategy, ATLAS will deliver KPIs for the sustainability assessment of historic building retrofit, also used in WP T2 and T3.

WP T2: Replicable & robust retrofit solutions

The main objective is to develop a decision support tool that enables end users to find compatible retrofit solutions from a collection of robust examples. compatible retrofit solutions. These will be validated and optimized previously by means of experimental and numerical testing. Furthermore, the compatibility of the solutions with the Alpine built heritage will be assessed based on the typologies identified in WP T1. The set of robust solutions will be integrated in Historic Building Atlas database.

WP T3: Toolkit for municipalities and regional planning strategies

Municipalities were identified as key actors when it comes to the optimal framework conditions for sustainable refurbishment of historic buildings. Accordingly, the WP aims at providing them with a holistic toolkit in order to path the way for implementing robust solutions (identified in WP T1 and T2). Integrated business models will show the value of sustainable maintenance of historic structures for the society and drive effective collaboration between local business, government and civil society.

WP T4: Demonstration and knowledge transfer

Main goal is to exploit the knowledge gained from the best practice examples collected in WP T1. Two outputs will allow stakeholders to practically experience best practice examples beyond the Historic Building database: the EnerCulTour and the ATLASonTOUR. Furthermore, WP T4 aims at implementing strategies on a municipality level, to foster heritage retrofits. Education modules and training material will ensure the implementation of project results. WP T4 will work towards actively support the collaboration with other research projects and training facilities.

Accompanying to the project there are two work packages:

WP M: Project manager (LP) is responsible for the overall content, day-to-day management and coordination; finance managers areresponsible for financial, monitoring, reporting, evaluation procedures; Steering Committee (SC): a representative of each Partner chaired by LP is responsible for implementation, risk and quality management; WPLeader manages the successful and timely completion of WP; WPL-Group: ensures the interaction between WPs; All partners will contribute to Progress Reports

WP C: Communication is a key factor for the success of ATLAS in terms of transferability and dissemination. Thematic outcomes from T1-T4 will be shared in an attractive way for the target groups. Therefore, the main project deliverables/outputs will be accompanied by communication/awareness-raising work (especially media work and social media) on general level (overall communication strategy) and on specific level in pilot regions (regional communication strategies). Project communication aims to: inform stakeholders (immediate and wider environment) about activities and projects progress; involve stakeholders in all Alpine regions, especially in the pilot areas, through media, social media and campaigning work; disseminate the project outputs to the target groups. The communication strategy will be jointly approved and evaluated at least twice a year by the SG.
