Advanced Tools for Low-carbon, high-value development of historic architecture in the Alpine Space

Expected outputs

Only if we intensify our efforts to valorize und use sustainably historic buildings we will be able to both meet the ambitious climate mitigation targets and protect the intrinsic characteristics of the Alpine cultural landscape. This task is a mission for the whole civil society. The ATLAS Project targets aims at (re-)discovering all traditional architecture (buildings and ensembles beyond the level of protection). These buildings are often located in neglected areas and provide low levels of energy efficiency and comfort. The project aims at paving the way for sustainable development of historic structures. This will include capitalizing and optimizing existing best practice solutions for building refurbishment and regional development. Stakeholders of the whole value chain and decision-makers are included in a network to ensure sustainability from social, ecological and cultural points of view.

1 A Historic Building Atlas as online database for best practice examples for energy refurbishments.

Accessible database of good practice solutions for sustainable renovation of historic and traditional buildings, that bridges the gap from locally existing robust solutions towards the application in transnational context.


2 Assessment scheme including KPIs for sustainability of historic building renovation.

Schemes for the assessment and benchmarking of sustainability of historic building renovation based on the sustainability criteria proposed by EUSALP working group.


3 An interactive retrofit guidance tool for historic buildings.

The guidance tool oriented to end users is crucial in the promotion of robust solutions for the retrofit of historic buildings. The underlying set of solutions will offer technical alternatives for the requirements of
the Alpine Space’s built heritage.

4 An holistic decision-support toolkit for municipalities.

Will provide a step-by-step process for municipalities to implement optimal sustainable regional development policies and strategies in terms of carbon mitigation, energy efficiency as well aslocalized socio-
economi impact and cultural values.
