Valorisation of innovative bio-economical potentials along bio-based food & botanical extract value chains in the Alpine Space

Get to know bioeconomy businesses and projects!

In the afternoon of the AlpBioEco final conference, participants could get to know different businesses and projects related to bioeconomy in short pitches – all of the presented businesses and project were somehow involved in the AlpBioEco project or cooperated with it. And all of them share one overarching topic: improving and promoting the bioeconomy. 

Bioeconomy businesses

Jana Bergant Bonistra

Bonistra is a local company based in Istria, Slovenia, and works with indigenous herbs. The focus lies on the production of high-quality hydrolates and essential oils. Next to the promotion of the long tradition of local herbs growing, Bonistra also contributes to the connection of important stakeholders and the education about herbs. Together with AlpBioEco, Bonistra worked on the innovative use of local herbs. Alexander Heller - HELFE 

HELFE is a family company from Austria which produces natural body care products. In the AlpBioEco project, HELFE was involved within the herbs and Alpine hay value chain. AlpBioEco connected HELFE with local farmers, and thus HELFE receives high-quality hay flowers and oat straw, and the farmers gain a second source of income. Next to the use of natural ingredients, HELFE also focuses on circular economy, following the “3 R’s”: reduce, reuse, recycle. Have a look at the AlpBioEco interview with Alexander Heller!

Federica Carlomagno - ROELMI HPC

ROELMI HPC focuses on sustainable and functional innovative ingredients in the health and personal care market. The Italian company does research, planning, development and production of functional, active and performance ingredients. The main areas are green chemistry and bio-fermentation, through which a circular economy is promoted. ROELMI HPC worked, for instance, with the fermentation of tomato peels or grape pomace.

Lorenzo Picco - Vortex

To use apple pomace in an effective way is the goal of the Italian start-up Vortex. Together with AlpBioEco, Vortex worked on the production of an apple paste, which is created of apple pomace. They checked different opportunities for the use of this paste and saw the highest potential in the cosmetics sector. Thus, Vortex now cooperates with an Italian cosmetic producer and develops eco-innovative cosmetics based on apple pomace. 

Vivian Böllersen - Walnussmeisterei

The Walnussmeisterei is a German company focusing on walnut farming, but also on processing and consulting. The company built up a huge network and aims at promoting walnut cultivation and processing in Germany, as currently most of the walnuts in Germany are imported. That is also why the Walnussmeisterei has its own tree nursery and cultivates different varieties, which fit to different circumstances. Bioeconomy projects

Dorian Wessely - AlpLinkBioEco

AlpLinkBioEco’s goal is to link bio-based industry value chains across the Alpine region. Value chains tackled were, for example, in the wood, chemistry, agro-food, or food-pharma packaging industries. One bioeconomic example from the project is mushroom cultivation on brewers’ grains substrate.

Tabea Waltenberg - Allthings.bioPRO

Allthings.bioPRO puts all emphasis on getting citizens involved in the bioeconomy and making their voices heard. With the development of a serious game, Allthings.bioPRO will channel citizens’ voices to the bio-based industries. Thereby, the bio-based economy will be shaped through a participatory approach.

Matteo Sabini - BIOBRIDGES

The BIOBRIDGES project tackled the key challenge of improving the marketability of bio-based products by fostering close cooperation and partnerships among bio-based industries, brands and consumers. One pillar of the project is, for example, bridge2brands, where the needs of brands are identified and addressed, to be then matched with bio-based solution providers.

Helena Cvenkel - CaSCo 

CaSCo (Carbon Smart Communities) works on material flows along processing chains in the timber industry in the Alpine Space and their impact on climate change. In particular, the transportation distances of the wood for the entire value chain could be easily reduced, which in turn would result in lower CO2 emissions.

Anastasiia Yakush - EU ECO-TANDEM

The aim of EU ECO-Tandem is to boost sustainable tourism development and to increase the capacity building of regional tourism SMEs. This happens, for instance, through helping SMEs to adopt more eco-sustainable and responsible approaches, or by transnational education and training.

Kristina Eder - GoDanuBio

With the focus on the priority areas “competitiveness of enterprises” and “institutional capacity and cooperation”, GoDanuBio aims at enhancing the socio-economic status in the Danube region by fostering bioeconomy. In particular, the rural exodus will be fought this way.

Susanna Albertini - The European Bioeconomy Network, LIFT & BIOVOICES & Transistion2Bio

The European Bioeconomy Network is an alliance of 73 EU-funded projects and initiatives dealing with bioeconomy promotion, communication and support. Through activities like networking or knowledge sharing, the impact will be maximised. Associated projects are, for example, LIFT, BIOVOICES or Transition2Bio
